Vasque Shoes Nobull Shoes

If there’s one pair of shoes that every winter wardrobe needs it’s a pair of black boots. Stylish and versatile, they go with everything and are very long wearing.

But that hardworking ability means they aren’t always the most comfortable, which they should be if you’re going to be wearing them all winter, every winter.

So we put the call-out for recommendations for the comfiest boots ever and received some great tips, from everyone from nurses to fashion stylists. An insider tip to get the absolute comfiest boots ever: Buy a secondhand pair and get them resoled – they’ll come perfectly worn in.

I’ve been buying these for years, whenever they go on sale, and stash them in my wardrobe. I have six pairs currently on the go in various states, from caked in mud to pristine, fresh out of the box.

I love them because I have very long, narrow feet with narrow ankles and no Steve Madden Shoes other boots fit (except the usually obscenely expensive Italian ones). The leather is not the best, but the shape, fit and comfort make up for it. And that’s what boot polish was invented for anyway. They also go with everything (probably – I only wear skirts and dresses, and yes, I buy those in multiples too). – Kirsty Allen

Isabella Anselmi Sera ankle boots, $289

Look, I will be the first to admit that these Isabella Anselmi boots are not cheap. Even when they go on sale, they’re still pretty expensive. But they are lovely to wear.

The heel is a block heel, but it’s not so chunky that they feel overly bulky and the height is just right for day-to-day life. If you take care of them they’ll last and in the time I’ve been wearing them I have never had a blister (score!). – Katie Doyle

Novo ‘Kenzas’ boot, $70

I love my black army boots. I have to replace them every year because I wear them so much. My favourite army boots are the Kenzas style from Novo, and I’m very thankful they have remained in stock for the four years I’ve been buying them. – Taylah Kereama

R.M.Williams ‘Adelaide’ boots, $749

The very first that week R.M.Williams opened their New Zealand shop (then in Britomart) I marched into the store and laid down my credit card to purchase a pair of their Adelaide boots. It was my first big investment fashion purchase, and it seemed like an unbelievable amount of money but six years later they look near new.

I’ve pulled them on by the tabs to wear with jeans, Teva Sandals with suits, with skirts and thick tights, and they’ve stood up to the occasion every time. They are my go-to when it’s raining and also for airport trips when I need a pair of shoes to slip in and out of.

I like the softly worn in look, but I’ve used their complimentary in-store polishing service a couple of times when they’ve started to look a bit dull. At the end of this winter I’ll take them back in, to get the heels rebuilt, and they’ll easily last me at least another six years. – Tyson Beckett

R.M.Williams ‘Comfort Plus’ boots, $645

It’s in the name. I’m a nurse and on my feet a lot. I need something practical and these are also stylish, and can cope with Auckland’s puddles and enable shortcuts across grass without having a day of soggy feet. My trainer wearing colleagues fare not so well. -Erin Edwards

Editor’s note: We had so many similar recommendations for R.M.Williams boots, and their longevity – specifically, the Millicent and Adelaide styles.

Minx ‘Willott’ boots, $219

I’m a huge fan of Minx. I’ve had a number of pairs of their ‘Willott’ boots and the hidden lift in the heel means they are some of the most comfortable boots I’ve ever worn.

Although Willott is my go to style, I’ve bought a few different styles now and without fail they wear in well, look great and are a staple for work and when I’m forced to socialise. Also worth a look if you are like me needing a bit of room in the calf as they have options! Not always easy to find. – Christina Francis

Mi Piaci ‘Timon’ boots, $420

I basically wear two shoes throughout the year. A chunky black slide in summer, then I switch to a chunky black boot in winter (it makes my morning shoe selection very easy). This winter my boot is the Timon boot from Mi Piaci. It ticks all the right boxes.

Classic black, which pairs perfectly with any and every outfit. Genuine, buttery soft leather, so they’re getting more comfortable each time I wear them. A chunky sole with a slight heel. This not only gives me a little height, which I absolutely need, but also Hoka One One  makes Timon easy to wear casually or more formally. And not only do I feel cool in them, but also SO comfortable.

The dream for my lifestyle, long days on my feet sourcing for a shoot, long days actually on a shoot, or long days running around with my twin boys. – Tori Ambler

Dear Frances ‘Park’ boots, $970

The boot that I waited a year to buy thankfully lived up to my boot daydreams. The Park boot by Dear Frances hits all the spots for Wellington living – lightweight, classic, a little bit stompy but not that stompy, and so buttery soft that I didn’t even get blisters wearing them in (unheard of).

They feel like slippers and only get more comfortable – worth the investment. I recommend talking to their customer care team to find the best size for you as they run a little large. – Maxine Kelly
